JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – March is Women’s History Month, a time to commemorate and celebrate the vital role of women in American history. We invited women within the #IAMIMSC team to tell us a little about themselves and their views on the importance of Women’s History Month.

Meet Chief Master Sgt. Melinda Fletcher, she’s a major command functional manager for the 3F5 Administration career field in the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center’s Expeditionary Support and Innovation Directorate in San Antonio.

Fletcher, who has 26 years in uniform, contributes to the Air Force’s lethality and readiness by “helping increase the job proficiencies for each admin member.”

Here’s more from Fletcher:

Why do you feel we need a Women’s History Month?
To remind ourselves of women’s contributions to our history and culture.

Tell us about a female coworker or friend you admire?
Col. Rivers – She was the first female that I worked with.  I admired how she managed a division that primarily consisted of men.

Who do you see as a good historic female role model and why?
Esther Blake is someone I see as a good historic female role model.  If it wasn’t for her breaking down barriers, I and the other females in the Air Force may not be here today.

What would you say to a little girl in elementary school about what she can achieve as an adult?
You can do anything that you put your mind to.  Don’t let people tell you no.  Find a way to achieve what you want to accomplish.

If you could have a conversation with your 6-year-old self, what would you tell her?
You are stronger than you think!  Also, start reading more. Learn to love reading, and enjoy learning from it. Trust me, it’ll be really helpful, as you’ll learn things that’ll be very useful in your future.  Lastly, enjoy life!
