JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas --
The commander of the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (Provisional) hosted a live, interactive virtual town hall March 9 to share information with people considering a move to San Antonio to join the AFIMSC headquarters team.
The panel included city and Joint Base San Antonio officials and offered insight into living and working in San Antonio. Having recently served as the commander at Joint Base San Antonio, Maj. Gen. Theresa Carter personally vouched for the Alamo City’s appeal and support of the military.
“I’m a little biased,” she said. “Having recently left San Antonio as the (JBSA) commander, I spent two years here. Without a doubt, the city says it is ‘Military City USA,’ and they absolutely live it each and every day. I don’t think you’ll find a more supportive community around a military installation anywhere in the United States.”
The AFIMSC headquarters is currently projected to stand up in San Antonio on May 5; it will include 350 people when all positions are filled. During the town hall, city officials touted the area’s vibrant and robust economy, employment opportunities for accompanying family members, and recreational and entertainment activities. The panel also shared information about relocating to San Antonio.
San Antonio is a great place to live, said retired Brig. Gen. Bob Murdock, director of San Antonio Military Affairs. The city’s weather – with more than 300 days of sunshine annually – low cost of living, and rich history also contribute to its charm, he added.
Joint Base San Antonio officials provided information about childcare and youth programs on base, as well as federal employment opportunities and procedures. In addition to potential job openings at the AFIMSC headquarters, there are some 600 job vacancies at the 502nd Air Base Wing, which might be a good fit for relocating spouses, said Felipe Jimenez, 502nd ABW technical director.
“We are always looking for folks, so make sure you have a good resume,” Jimenez said. “If you’re a current federal employee, update your resume. We post all our job opportunities on USAJOBS, so go in there, use that tool and look for opportunities to apply.”
AFIMSC officials will provide more information about filling civilian vacancies during a later town hall. More details on that event will be provided as plans are finalized.
