Mission Monday: Security Forces Weapons and Tactics

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – This week’s Mission Monday features Master Sgt. Bradley Akers, a program manager for the Security Forces Weapons and Tactics team at the Air Force Security Forces Center. 

Akers and the weapons and tactics team oversee the tactics development process for the security forces enterprise, which includes  integrating base defense forces into large-scale exercises, the hosting of annual air base defense tactics review boards, while also supporting major command specific weapons and tactics conferences.  Additionally, he directs the Security Forces Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course at Ft. Bliss, Texas, while also overseeing graduate management of 163 SF Weapons & Tactics instructors who are responsible developing and managing relevant air base defense doctrine in for  37,000 total force defenders.

“What keeps me locked is the initiative that allows me to mold the direction of my career field and the opportunity to develop the next generation of warfighters,” Akers said. “I want to contribute to something bigger than myself.” 

We asked Akers, from Riverside, Ohio, to tell us more about himself and the work he does for the Department the Air Force. 

What do you love about your job? 

I love my current job because I’m in position where I can make meaningful impacts to the career field.  

When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated? 

Knowing that my team can influence the training of 37,000 Defenders and that the projects we work on make a difference within the Air Force. 

Why are you and your team important to the Air Force/Space Force enterprise/your customers? 

Our team manages and drives the development of all base defense tactics, techniques and procedures for the Air Force. 

Describe a project/event you and your team worked on recently that gave you a great sense of accomplishment: 

We are currently in the stages of publishing the first-ever air base defense AFTTP (Air Force tactics, techniques and procedures), which will provide the security forces enterprise with a common operating procedure to train towards for base defense.  Additionally, our team is executing the Security Forces weapons and tactics instructor course under a newly signed Headquarters Air Force-supported syllabus which will also be the first-ever in security forces history.
