JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Meet Christina Valdez, the November AFIMSC #IAMIMSC award winner. Valdez is the executive officer for the AFIMSC Detachment 7 team at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.

The #IAMIMSC award recognizes people whose actions have promoted connectedness and service before self within their workplace or the center. In addition to her daily responsibilities with the detachment, Valdez develops, plans and leads monthly gatherings so the team can connect and socialize while covering a variety of personal and professional development topics.

We asked her a few questions about being part of the AFIMSC team and promoting connectedness around the organization.

Primary duty responsibilities: Day-to-day operations for me include checking for taskers, scheduling meetings across the detachment and throughout our customer base, creating and reviewing presentations and correspondence, organizing office events, facilitating IT support and providing anything else my detachment teammates need.

What do you like most about being a part of the AFIMSC team?
Feeling as if I am part of a family. Since I have been here, I have always felt welcomed and appreciated for what I do. When I need assistance or guidance, I’m always provided the support needed.

Why do you think it’s important for AFIMSC teammates and their families to feel connected to the organization?
Having that sense of connectedness to the organization can positively promote one’s overall outlook on their work environment, making them feel valued and supported, which can help families feel connect as well. Not having a sense of belonging at work can really have a negative impact on wellbeing and that can potentially cross over to families as well.

What types of connectedness activities or events do you most enjoy participating in and why?
I enjoy getting together with my co-workers whether in-person or virtually. Catching up and sharing news or experiences always provides a feeling of being connected to the team I work with.

What advice do you have for people who are trying to build a better sense of belonging and kinship with their team?
Communicate effectively with one another. Also, be open to learning new platforms in order to stay connected. With the abrupt posture of telework, I believe we all needed to learn how to adjust to new norms when communicating across various platforms.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I feel blessed to be a part of this organization and honored to have been nominated for this award.
