With the Tops in Blue program on pause, the Air Force Services Activity has been hard at work on a robust entertainment showcase for Airmen around the globe.

“The Air Force Services Activity is starting a new initiative with commercial entertainment; which is one of the things Airmen and their families have said they wanted to see,” said Naybu Fullman, performance director for AFSVA’s Air Force Entertainment.

This year, AFSVA has scheduled six performers to tour select bases. Every event will be free to members of the base.

There are two adult comedy shows, something high on Airmen wish lists.  They feature Ben Bailey, star of Discovery Channel’s Cash Cab; and Dean Edwards, star of MTV2’s Guy Code and former member of Saturday Night Live. Because of large interest, two retired Air Force comedians will tour with them, allowing for extended show times.

Illusionist Jason Michaels will perform five large illusions, with several assistant performers. Michaels’ shows are for all ages.

Various concerts are also on tap: David Cook, season 7 American Idol winner; and two up-and-coming country artists Kyle Jennings and Ryan Daniels.

With these entertainers on the calendar, the AFSVA entertainment team is already looking further out.

“What we are looking at next is a variety show that would feature a ventriloquist and his friends; someone that would do comedy and magic and someone that would do juggling,” said Jeri White, AFSVA’s Air Force Entertainment production director.

They also plan to focus on R&B as the next style of music for the field.

Currently, isolated or remote installations are receiving most of the entertainment but AFSVA is looking into commercial sponsorship and partnering with Navy and Army entertainment programs to reduce costs and provide greater opportunities for more bases.

“What Airmen need to know is that the Air Force wants them to step away, rejuvenate and take their mind off things — whether it is personal or the mission — just to enjoy something free with their families or friends and to have a good time,” White said. “That’s really what this is all about.”
