The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center activated it's second detachment, Detachment 8, during a ceremony at Langley Air Force Base, April 24.

Maj. Gen. Theresa Carter, AFIMSC commander, presided over the activation ceremony as Col. Russell Hula assumed command of the new detachment.

"We are affecting every (major command) and multiple career fields," said Carter during the activation ceremony. "It is a fundamental and foundational change to the way the Air Force is choosing to deliver an essential capability."

AFIMSC, a unit of Air Force Materiel Command, performs major command-level installation and mission support activities, and serves as the single intermediate-level headquarters, providing installation and expeditionary support for 77 major installations, 10 MAJCOMs and two direct reporting units.

The center is the parent organization for several existing field operating agencies including the Air Force Security Forces Center, Air Force Civil Engineer Center, Air Force Installation Contracting Agency and the Air Force Services Activity, as well as other FOAs providing installation capabilities.

Detachment 8 directly supports Air Combat Command, headquartered here.

"I want to thank the staffs that have been so impacted by this change," said Hula during his remarks. "My commitment to [the commander ACC] and the ACC staff is that we will continue to strive and provide that same outstanding, agile combat support, focused on ACC missions no matter what patch we're wearing."

Langley is the second in a series of detachment activations within AFIMSC. The first was earlier this month in support of Pacific Air Forces at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. A total of 10 detachments will be activated globally.
