JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – On April 6, 2015, the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center was activated to centralize management support and consolidate enterprise-level installation and mission support operations to help commanders focus on their primary mission areas. Ten years later, AFIMSC is celebrating its remarkable journey of growth, innovation and mission success.
Since its stand up in response to significant Department of Defense budget cuts, AFIMSC, under Air Force Materiel Command, has evolved into a critical enabler of the Department of the Air Force mission, driving lethality and readiness, while providing vital support to warfighters and their families.
Maj. Gen. Theresa Carter led the establishment and stand-up of AFIMSC, integrating six primary subordinate units and activating 10 detachments to provide direct support to DAF commands. By 2015, the center, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio – Lackland, Texas, was fully operational, managing over 150 mission support capabilities. AFIMSC achieved full operational capability in 2016, solidifying the center’s role as a vital component of DAF mission execution.
Between 2017 and 2019, Maj. Gen. Bradley Spacy’s leadership focused on stabilizing and rightsizing the organization. Known as AFIMSC 2.0, this phase consolidated financial functions and reduced subordinate units from six to four. The center fostered innovation through initiatives including the Installation and Mission Support Weapons and Tactics Conference and the Innovation Rodeo, both of which became annual flagship events.
From 2019 to 2022, under Maj. Gen. Tom Wilcox, AFIMSC adapted to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading efforts to secure contracts for critical supplies and providing essential support to the DAF and DOD. The center also expanded its role with the U.S. Space Force and developed the Office of the Future Initiative to support the post-pandemic work environment. In 2021, AFIMSC released its first strategic plan, focusing on increasing readiness, supporting Airmen and families and driving organizational excellence.
Since 2022, under Maj. Gen. John Allen’s leadership, AFIMSC has continued to evolve to meet the changing global security environment. The center transitioned to an A-Staff structure for better strategic planning, with a focus on agile combat employment and countering future threats, particularly from China.
