COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It’s Mission Monday. Jeff Young is the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s on-site/ architect and contracting officer representative for the U.S. Air Force Academy. 

In that position, he’s responsible for contract administration for work being done on the Academy’s Cadet Chapel, overseeing the quality assurance team on site.  

“I walk the job site, review daily inspection reports, provide ‘boots on the ground’ information to the AFCEC Cadet Chapel team, attend various construction meetings and act as liaison to visiting leaders and distinguished visitors,” he said. 

We asked Young to tell us a little about himself and how his work supports the Department of the Air Force and its missions. 

What do you love about your job? 
Everything. I’ve always wanted to be a registered architect and I have an undergraduate degree in Construction Management. I enjoy working at construction sites and I’ve been working on the USAFA Cadet Chapel since October 2010. Over a nine-year period at the Academy, I was the project manager for several large-scale Cadet Chapel restoration projects when I worked at USAFA’s 10th Civil Engineer Squadron. I love being on site and involved in day-to-day project construction requirements.

When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated? 
My faith, my love of working and the joy of learning new things every day. Having a great group of people to work with, and an amazing project to work on, is also a big part of my motivation.

Why are you and your team important to the Air Force enterprise and your customers? 
To assure that construction contract requirements are effectively executed.

Describe a project or event you and your team worked on recently that gave you a great sense of accomplishment: 
I was the construction manager at the 10th CES from 2019 to 2021 so the various USAFA Cadet Chapel restoration projects since 2010. Also, the new 17,000 square foot USAFA Eisenhower Golf Course Clubhouse. 

How does what you do support AFIMSC’s strategic priorities? 
By being the AFIMSC team member that monitors USAFA projects and holds project stakeholders accountable to their contractual responsibilities. Also, by being an effective communicator and having the stamina to see projects through to completion.

Is there anything else you’d like to add which might help people understand the importance of what you do for the Department of the Air Force? 
Seek clarity and gain consensus. Communicate effectively. Be good at what you do. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know, I’ll find out.”
