JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- Meet Capt. Miles W.A. Fisher, spouse of Capt. Erica P. Carson with headquarters Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center support staff.
Fisher, our November Spouse Spotlight, has been around the military since graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy in May 2015. He was an inactive Reservist while attending medical school at The Ohio State University, and returned to active duty in the summer of 2019. He’s currently an orthopedic surgery resident at Brook Army Medical Center.
We asked him to tell us a little more about his experience.
What’s your first memory as the spouse of an Airman?
Erica and I only recently got married (Sept. 5, 2020) but my first memory as the significant other of an Airman is when she reported for her first day of initial skills training as a nuclear and missile operations officer in Lompoc, California.
What’s your best experience as the spouse of an Airman?
Having a force support officer as a spouse has been beneficial when I have questions about in processing, leave, temporary duty assignments and other personnel related items.
What’s a challenge you and your spouse overcame as a team?
Due to our career paths, Erica and I spent most of our Air Force careers apart. While I was in medical school, she was stationed in California and Wyoming. Just before I returned to active duty, she cross-trained and was told her next duty station would be in Germany. Because frequent trips weren’t realistic, we knew we’d have to make time for each other via facetime, despite the time difference. Now she’s in San Antonio!
What’s your best advice for other AFIMSC spouses?
Communication is key. Over communication is better.
Do you have a mantra that you live by and how does it help?
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in the moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King This quote serves as my reminder to be consistent.
What’s something you cherish from your time as a spouse and why?
I cherish the ability to spend time with Erica. Now that we are stationed together at Joint Base San Antonio, the ability to decompress together helps me recharge and refocus for the upcoming week.
