JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- Meet #IMSCFamily Rayden C. Hebblethwaite, spouse of Master Sgt. Stephen Hebblethwaite at Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center headquarters, here.
Rayden has been around the military for almost 15 years, beginning as a contractor at various bases stateside and overseas. She met her husband at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea in 2011 and the couple will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary in September.
We asked Rayden to tell us a little more about her life with the military.
What’s your first memory as the spouse of an Airman?
My first thought was “What did I get myself into!?” I also knew this is where our love story begins, and I was more than excited. It didn’t take long for me to get in a groove, learn to drive a manual transmission overseas, make friends and find a job.
What’s your best experience as the spouse of an Airman?
I guess I have two. It’s extremely rewarding to watch and see your spouse succeed and put their mind, body and soul into his work. He has always inspired me to never give up and showed me that in order for success you must work hard and earn it. As a military spouse, we get to see their struggles and we also get to help and see how they overcome them. I would say watching my husband grow and sharing that experience together is hands down the best experience as a military spouse.
A more personal rewarding experience was working up to become the manager of the Saber Pet Lodge at Spangdahlem AB, Germany. I never dreamed of having a career supporting the military which allowed me to do what I had a passion for and loved. It also gave me an opportunity to give back to the base community by ensuring a safe place for people to bring their pets!
What’s a challenge you and your spouse overcame as a team?
Deployments! The first one was hard and challenging but the next two or three were a breeze. We always have to look at these challenges from both sides -- I knew it was hard for me and it had to be hard for him too. Always have that open communication on how you feel. Talk openly because together as one you can get through anything. Always & forever!
What your best advice for other AFIMSC spouses?
Always be open to new experiences. Expect the unexpected. Do not give up on your personal goals!
Do you have a mantra that you live by and how does it help?
“Everything happens for a reason!” and “Life is a lesson, learn from it!”
What’s something you cherish from your time as a spouse and why?
I have countless cherished memories! I will always cherish the friendships we have made over the years. The family within the military that you gain, even if you think you didn’t need it or want it, embrace it and cherish it! We are all Super Spouses and never have the time for this or that. Make the time, I promise you will cherish those small moments.
