Getting to know the new AFIMSC first sergeant

  • Published

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Master Sgt. Luis Serrano is the new Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center first sergeant, or first shirt. In his new role, he will advise the AFIMSC commander on the readiness, health, morale, welfare, and quality of life of Airmen and families across the center to ensure a mission-ready force.

Serrano, a native of Naguabo, Puerto Rico, has 15 years of service under his belt. We asked him a few questions about his career and his thoughts about serving as the AFIMSC first shirt.

Can you tell us a little about your career leading up to this point?
I am a C-130 crew chief, serving as a flying crew chief for four years at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and deploying four times during my career. I also served as an aircraft maintenance instructor for 22 different Latin American countries for four years.

In 2019, I transitioned to become a first sergeant. I served two years as the shirt for the 59th Medical Wing on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, before moving to the Air Force Security Forces Center. After earning a promotion, I transitioned to AFIMSC.

What about joining the AFIMSC team as our new first sergeant has you the most excited?
I am truly excited for the new challenge. Being able to serve so many different career fields spanning the globe is something not many other first sergeants can say they do.

What do you want the AFIMSC team to know about you?
I have a wife and two kids. I love being outdoors and camping with the family. I also like reading and listening to audio books and podcasts.

What do you like most about being in the Air Force?
I love serving my country and being part of a team that is working toward a mission. I have created an Air Force family that I know has my back when times get hard. Lastly, the Air Force has provided me with many opportunities I would have never even dreamed of having.

What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
I live on 25 acres and own my own shooting range. I also own three rentals in San Antonio, looking for a fourth. Finally, I teach financial management classes.
