JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- Meet Vernon Rogers, spouse of Senior Master Sgt. Whitney Rogers, superintendent of the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center's Commander's Action Group, is our December #IMSCFamily Spotlight.

Vernon has been around the military for 23 years, 20 of those years as an Air Force active-duty member. We asked him to tell us a little more about his life with the military.

What’s your first memory as the spouse of an Airman?
Getting invited to the Air Force Services Center Holiday Party. I had so much fun being a spouse.

What’s your best experience as the spouse of an Airman?
When she worked protocol. I got the opportunity to tour the President of the United States' motorcade armored vehicles.

What’s a challenge you and your spouse overcame as a team?
The challenge of dealing with dual deployments while the children were very young.

What's your best advice for other AFIMSC spouses?
Just as much as we need support from our military spouses, they too need support from us. Support them in all they do, while working together to determine the best decisions for the family.

Do you have a mantra that you live by and how does it help?
Play the hand you're dealt. In life, we have many unexpected challenges. We just have to make the most of the situation or circumstances.  It helps me get through situations I have no control over.

What’s something you cherish from your time as a spouse and why?
She missed my 20-year Air Force retirement due to being deployed. However, while deployed she coordinated and surprised me with a very nice shadow box for my retirement.  I had no idea!
