#IAMIMSC: Cary Kelly

Duty title and unit: Financial Technician, Travel Pay Processing Unit, Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota

Primary duty responsibilities: I am a team lead in the merged accountability and fund reporting section (MAFR), posting accounting for travel pay vouchers and collections to support the Air Force mission globally. Our primary responsibility is to balance a daily reconciliation report.

What’s the best part of your job?
What I like best about my job are the people I work with. They are a great teamwork-focused bunch. We work hard and play hard; we laugh and cry together. We are fierce competitors in the holiday office decorating contests. They truly make coming to work in the morning a pure joy.

What’s a recent project that gave you a great sense of accomplishment?
I was recently tasked with clearing an accumulation of MAFR out-of-balance transactions from prior months and years. This occurred due to some system issues that prevented us from daily balancing. I had a lot of help, but it was a great sense of accomplishment to see our error reports diminished.

Any claims to fame?
I have served nine years as a non-appropriated fund employee and an additional 10 years as a GS employee. Over the years, I have been honored to receive several base-level employee of the quarter awards, team of the quarter and, recently, AFIMSC 4th quarter category 1 civilian of the quarter.

When I’m not at work, I love to travel. My bucket list includes visiting all the National Parks in the U.S.

Do you follow any mantra?
Worry less, pray more!

Anything else you’d like to add?
I am a proud parent of a son soon to graduate with a cyber-operations degree and a daughter who graduated from college last May and is currently earning her pilot’s license.
