Protecting sea turtles
Sea turtle nesting season occurs annually from May 1 to Oct. 31. The more than 3,000 threatened and endangered loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtle nests normally deposited on Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, account for five percent of all sea turtle nests in the state of Florida. The 45th Space Wing’s exterior lighting policy requires all non-essential lights be turned off during the nesting season. (U.S. Air Force graphic by James Rainier)
