Getting to know the new AFIMSC Det 5 civilian leader

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Janeva Maxson is the new Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Detachment 5 civilian leader at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.

One of 10 detachments serving as the liaison and on-site support between Air Force major commands, Space Force and the AFIMSC enterprise, Detachment 5 delivers agile installation and mission support across the Air Force District of Washington and National Capital Region.

We asked Maxson a few question about her life, her career and her thoughts about joining the AFIMSC team.

Time in service?
I started working for the Air Force right out of college in 1996, through a program called the outstanding scholar program. My first job was at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Tinker Air Force Base, as a program analyst in the commodities group. I have enjoyed every minute of it and am looking forward to my 25th work anniversary in June.

Hometown?
I was born in Durant, Oklahoma, where most of my family still lives. I have a large extended family and, most importantly, two awesome granddaughters, so I try to get home as much as I can. My mom reminds me all the time that I have moved halfway across the country.

Can you please tell us a little about your career leading up to this point?
I have really been blessed with being able to work in several different career fields. I am a true loggie at heart, but I have also worked in financial management, operations and civil engineering. During my time at Tinker, I worked with the working capital fund in FM and as the resource management division chief for the propulsion group. I then moved to the Pentagon as a career-broadener where I got the PPBE (planning, programming, budgeting and execution) stink on me.

I spent a year at the Naval War College as part of the Defense Senior Leader Development program professional military education requirement. After school, I went back to the Pentagon and worked the joint capability integration and development system process for the command, control, communications and computers/cyber and battlespace awareness functional capability board. Before becoming the AFIMSC Detachment 5 civilian leader, I was the logistics, engineering and force protection deputy director for the Air Force District of Washington.

What about your new role has you the most excited?
First, I am just blessed to be here. This is a great opportunity. For me, the most exciting thing is the scope of impact and influence in this position. It is dynamic and diverse; but as they say, with great power comes great responsibility and I am up for the task.

What do you want the AFIMSC team to know about you?
We are all in this together, so how can I help you?

What do you like most about working for the Air Force?
For me, working for the Air Force is a calling. To be entrusted with providing support to our Airmen at the tip of the spear all over the world is such an honor. I heard a saying the other day that really spoke to me: ‘If you love what you do, then you will always be good at it.’

What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
I lived in Venezuela for 10 years. My parents and grandparents moved there when I was two. We lived in the middle of nowhere on a farm so I was homeschooled until we moved back to Oklahoma when I was in the 7th grade. Best childhood ever!

Is there anything you would like to add?
I want to thank the Detachment 5 team for welcoming me into their fold. I am humbled and honored to be a part of the family.
