WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, OHIO – The Air Force Civil Engineer Center awarded a $153 million contract Aug. 18, 2020, to expand the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) with a new intelligence production facility here.

The project is a collaborative effort between AFCEC and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District.

AFCEC, a primary subordinate unit of the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, will oversee the project and Messer Construction will execute the build of the new facility. The project will add a controlled multi-floor facility to the NASIC complex, in addition to renovating and altering existing buildings to ensure code compliance and connection to the new structure.

As AFCEC’s Facility Engineering Directorate oversees the execution of the project, it will also provide centralized design and planning, and ensure the project stays on time and within budget to deliver resilient infrastructure solutions.

“The Air Force depends on the technical expertise of the professionals from AFCEC to deliver modern infrastructure solutions for mission commanders,” said Col. David Norton, director of AFCEC’s Facility Engineering Directorate. “The mission at NASIC is critically important to national security and they need technologically-advanced and upgraded facilities with additional space to fulfill their intelligence missions. We have incorporated modern design and construction techniques to build a highly secure new structure to ensure the longest lifespan at the overall lowest lifecycle cost.”

Headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, NASIC serves the Department of Defense by providing engineering-level scientific and technical intelligence on air, space, missile and cyber threats. The new state-of-the-art facility provides controlled and secure workspaces, dedicated labs, offices and collaborative space to help NASIC analysts accomplish their national security mission.

This four-year development is the largest single-site construction effort in Wright-Patterson’s history.

“NASIC’s mission growth outpaced our facilities’ ability to efficiency and effectively support the mission,” said Col. Maurizio Calabrese, NASIC commander. “We thank all the project delivery partners for their role in quickly designing and now awarding all aspects of this expansion ahead of schedule and within budget.

“This critical project supports 980 analysts who provide world-class scientific and technological intelligence to our nation,” Calabrese said. “We look forward to the capacity and capability improvements it brings NASIC when construction is complete and we operationalize the latest addition to our complex.”
