Colonel Matthew P. Benivegna is the Deputy Director, Air Force Civil Engineer Center, Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, Air Force Material Command, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. In this position he assists the director in leading a 1,900-person primary subordinate unit responsible for providing responsive, flexible full-spectrum installation engineering services. AFCEC’s missions include facility investment planning, design and construction, operation’s support, real property management, energy support, environmental compliance and restoration, and readiness and emergency management. The unit conducts its missions at more than 75 locations worldwide.
Col Benivegna entered the Air Force in June of 1993 as a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. As a career Civil Engineer, he held several base, MAJCOM, and Air Staff-level positions. His base-level experience included assignments in the Environmental, Maintenance Engineering, Operations, and Resources Flights.
Prior to commanding the Mission Support Group at McConnell AFB, he commanded the 87th Civil Engineer Squadron, at JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ which received the distinction as the best Civil Engineer Squadron in the Air Force 2013. He also commanded the 20th Civil Engineer Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. He was assigned to the Air Staff (Pentagon) as the Chief of the Force Enabler Programs Branch with responsibility for the development and management of the Non-appropriated Funds, Defense Access Roads, Defense Logistics and Fuels, P-341 – Unspecified Minor Construction, and Temporary Facilities Programs.
While at HQ USAFE he was responsible for the O&M and base sustainment programs and later worked all deployment and readiness issues for the Civil Engineer, Contracting, Security Forces, and Services personnel within the Command. When assigned to the 819 RED HORSE Squadron, he completed several troop training projects that culminated with a deployment to Oman where his team completely re-built an airfield in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Col. Benivegna deployed six times to various locations within the AOR.
