TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – Tyndall moved closer to its first new entry control facility when it held a construction kick-off meeting Sept. 29 for a new commercial gate complex.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the nearly $18.2 million contract for the installation’s new commercial gate complex to ERM, Inc. Sept. 8. This project will provide the installation with a 3,525-square-foot commercial vehicle inspection port and over 169,000-square-feet of roadway infrastructure.

“The new gate will increase the installation’s security and resiliency while helping to reduce impacts of commercial traffic along Highway 98,” said Ken Webb, project manager with the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Natural Disaster Recovery Division.

The contract also includes all necessary utilities, services, site improvements, pavements, detection and protection features, security enhancements and other supporting work to provide a functioning entry control facility.

To increase resiliency, the facility will be built with reinforced concrete foundations and floor slabs, standing-seam metal roofs, metal roof deck with steel framing and cast-in-place or masonry walls. The buildings will be built to withstand 165 mph hurricane-force winds.

“The NDR team is very excited to kick-off construction for this project early in the program,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Hoisington, execution branch chief for AFCEC’s NDR Division. “Once complete, the commercial gate complex will provide an additional avenue to manage construction traffic safely and efficiently.”
Construction for the complex is anticipated to be complete by October 2023.

The nearly $5 billion rebuild at Tyndall will be a five-to-seven-year process, which includes over 40 new military construction projects and 260 facility sustainment restoration and modernization projects.
